The skies may have been gray and full of rain, but we managed to sneak in this little hike through the canyon to this waterfall. We were certainly missing the sun, but it felt like a fitting way to celebrate the solstice this year and welcome back the sun. We actually went the day before the true solstice so that we could spend the next day crafting, baking and celebrating with all of our traditions, both old and new.

My husband took over with the camera for this hike. I can never seem to get enough pictures of myself with the kids, which seems so important. We have to be very intentional to try and keep some sort of balance in the annual photo books!

Though the weather has been cold and we've already seen some snow on the ground, it feels wonderful to breathe in fresh air. This year has felt far too stuffy.

Of course, I can't leave out the littlest snow bunny!

Being outdoors has this magical power to remind us of the simpler things in life. The excitement of running a stick through a puddle. The careful placement of our feet as we navigate a bumpy, rocky trail. The warmth and brightness of the sun.

It's been some time since my family has made it out for a hike together and this was our first attempt as a family of six. It felt quite daring to be out there on the trail, especially as we lost sight of the car. While there were certainly a few meltdowns and some falls in the mud, the joy I saw in their little faces was well-worth the effort it took to get everyone out.
